About the position

The Housing Resource Specialist at Housing Services Mid Michigan is responsible for providing essential support and resources to individuals facing housing crises. This full-time role involves case management, client assessments, and facilitating access to various housing assistance programs. The specialist will work closely with clients to develop housing plans, assist with applications for entitlements, and manage waiting lists for housing vouchers, all while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide services in accordance with the policies and procedures of HSMM
  • Screen clients who call or walk in and assess for services
  • Schedule and complete intake appointments for those who may qualify for services
  • Provide case management to rapidly re-house the homeless and those facing homelessness
  • Assist clients with identifying monthly budgets
  • Provide resource information and refer clients to supportive services including shelter, entitlement programs, affordable housing and basic needs
  • Help clients complete applications for SSI, SSDI, Medicaid, Food Stamps and all other entitlements
  • Prepare a housing plan with client's identified goals
  • Oversee the Housing Choice Voucher Homeless Preference waiting list
  • Complete the required recertification process for the waiting list
  • Assist clients with completing Project Based Voucher applications
  • Assist clients with their housing search through applications for rental assistance, advocacy, landlord/tenant issues and education
  • Manage the ESP motel program
  • Respond to after hour emergency phone calls as needed for those needing emergency shelter
  • Track funding for multiple programs on an Excel spreadsheet
  • Enter household information in the HMIS data entry system
  • Complete monthly reports for services provided in Clinton County
  • Conduct Habitability Housing Inspections as needed-some travel around Clinton County
  • Prepare housing and employment guides for distribution (minimum monthly but can be more)
  • Maintain organized and detailed paper files and case notes
  • Track your daily activities
  • Facilitate power point presentations to agencies, board members and community partners
  • Make follow-up phone calls to clients to record the housing status before file closing
  • Work cooperatively with other staff members and agencies to assist clients
  • Act as a Back-up Person for other Case Managers
  • Attend monthly Inter-agency Case Review & By Names list meetings
  • Participate in fundraising and agency events (Project Connect, Adopt a Family, etc)
  • Other duties as may be assigned by Executive Director/Assistant Director.

Requirements

  • Some college coursework in the human services field or four years of experience in housing assistance
  • Minimum of one-year experience working with those in crisis or in housing assistance
  • Must have computer experience
  • Valid driver's license and maintain vehicle insurance
