About the position

The Housing Technician position at the City of Tucson's Department of Housing and Community Development is a vital role that serves the community by providing essential maintenance services for public housing units. This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing both the interior and exterior of housing and shelter units, ensuring they meet safety and quality standards. The technician evaluates the condition of these units, estimates the necessary equipment and materials for repairs, and performs a variety of maintenance tasks to uphold the integrity of the facilities. Under the supervision of a Housing Supervisor, the Housing Technician will troubleshoot and resolve issues related to plumbing, electrical systems, appliances, heating and cooling equipment, and more. This includes fabricating and installing flooring and drywall, changing locks, and painting. The technician is also responsible for maintaining the exterior of the facilities, which involves tasks such as painting, repairing fences and walkways, performing landscaping, and ensuring the cleanliness of the surroundings. In addition to hands-on maintenance work, the Housing Technician will drive to various locations to complete work orders, maintain service records, and process necessary paperwork. The role requires the technician to turn over housing and shelter units upon tenant move-out or vacancy, ensuring that the units are ready for new occupants. The technician will also respond to emergency maintenance calls and provide guidance to other personnel as needed. This position may require working evenings, weekends, and holidays as part of mandatory on-call rotations, and involves both indoor and outdoor work with potential exposure to various hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs the interior and exterior of public housing and shelter units.
  • Evaluates the condition of housing and shelter units.
  • Estimates equipment and material needs for repairs.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs plumbing, electrical systems, appliances, and HVAC equipment.
  • Fabricates and installs flooring and drywall, changes locks, and performs painting tasks.
  • Maintains the exterior of facilities by painting, repairing fences and walkways, and performing landscaping.
  • Drives to various locations to complete work orders and maintain service records.
  • Turns over housing and shelter units upon tenant move-out or vacancy.
  • Cleans work areas and repairs equipment as needed.
  • Responds to emergency maintenance calls and assists with special carpentry projects.
  • Educates residents on the progress and completion of maintenance duties performed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid and unrestricted Arizona Class D Driver License.
  • Four years of directly related experience in facilities maintenance or a similar field.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English; Spanish is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Five or more years of experience performing general maintenance tasks including painting, carpentry, and minor repairs.
  • Experience in customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems and regulations.
  • Familiarity with Fair Housing laws and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
