About the position

Our client, a 300+ employee machinery manufacturing company, is seeking an HR Director to join their on-site team in Grand Rapids, MI. This role presents an exciting opportunity to manage a small HR team and lead human resources efforts in a unionized plant. The HR Director will partner closely with the Operations Management team and other local leadership, serving as the key point of contact for all union-related aspects, supporting 180 union employees. The ideal candidate will thrive in a union environment and enjoy leading strategic HR projects in an hourly-heavy setting. In this position, the HR Director will be responsible for managing and developing a small HR team, delegating tasks accordingly to ensure efficient operations. A significant aspect of the role involves managing the union grievance process and serving as the primary point of contact for the union employees. The HR Director will implement long-term strategic HR policies, programs, and talent management strategies that align with the company's goals. Additionally, the role requires providing guidance on policy, laws, and corrective actions to ensure compliance and best practices. The HR Director will oversee employee training programs and manage the Joint Training Committee, driving a performance-based culture within the organization. This includes supporting operations management with employee evaluations and identifying ongoing training needs. The HR Director will also ensure adherence to federal, state, and local employment laws, manage statewide grants for employee development opportunities, and handle monthly HR operational reporting along with other HR administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop a small HR team and delegate tasks accordingly
  • Manage union grievance process and serve as key POC for 180 union employees
  • Implement long term strategic HR policies, programs and talent management strategies
  • Provide guidance on policy, laws and corrective actions

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related field
  • 6+ years of well-rounded HR experience
  • 2+ years in a people-management role
  • 2+ years' experience in a demanding union environment, including leading grievance processes, dissecting union contracts and managing the relationship with the union
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems
