About the position

The University of Minnesota Law School is seeking a Human Resources Generalist to support the HR functions within the Law School. This newly created position will primarily focus on payroll coordination and HRMS management, playing a vital role in managing bi-weekly payroll for a diverse group of 400-600 employees, including temporary employees, students, adjuncts, staff, and faculty. The HR Generalist will ensure the integrity of payroll data and continuously monitor HR information needs to adapt to changing requirements. This role requires a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as the Law School serves a varied group of internal and external constituents. The HR Generalist will act as a subject matter expert in payroll administration, implementing best practices and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures. The position involves significant responsibilities in payroll preparation and management, where the HR Generalist will serve as the time and absence administrator, run reports, and ensure accurate time reporting and job data records for all employees. They will develop best practices for internal process improvements and documentation, partner with staff and faculty on complex payroll hiring processes, and serve as a resource for updated payroll and HR policies. Additionally, the HR Generalist will maintain HR files, audit position management, and assist in internal auditing and quality control activities. This is a hybrid position, requiring on-campus presence one to two days per week initially, with flexibility as the role's duties are understood. Responsibilities

  • Serve as time and absence administrator; run reports and employee queries to ensure accurate time reported and job data records for all employees.
  • Develop best practices for the Law School internal process improvements and documentation to ensure flawless execution of payroll and HR processes.
  • Partner within the Law School and advise staff and faculty on complex appointment and payroll hiring prior to submission of TDX requests.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and students regarding updated payroll & HR policies and procedures that comply with Collective Bargaining Agreements and Civil Service rules.
  • Build relevant knowledge and understanding of how TDX and PeopleSoft work together, including serving on committees and workgroups relevant to HRMS, TDX/PEAK, time and absence management, and payroll.
  • Ensure the accuracy of entries by employees and resolve issues where needed.
  • Provide training and knowledge transfer to the Law School community as updates to TDX forms and system requirements are implemented.
  • Initiate and respond to inquiries concerning non-routine issues and identify potential approaches and solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with departments in the Law School to produce solutions, answer questions, and find efficiencies.
  • Assist in internal auditing and quality control activities, including auditing payroll abstracts and reviewing the pre-confirm report.
  • Serve as primary I-9 administrator and first point of contact for the general Law HR inbox.
  • Maintain HR files and documents for all employees electronically and in Perceptive Content.
  • Create and submit Temp/Casual and student appointment letters and submissions in TDX.
  • Audit Position Management regularly to ensure correct reporting structures, FTE changes, and classifications.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree, or a combination of education and/or experience to equal four years.
  • Experience processing and auditing payroll.
  • Experience handling confidential and time-sensitive materials.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Experience interacting effectively and establishing cooperative working relationships with all levels in an organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Mail, etc.).
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Nice-to-haves

  • BA/BS degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • Experience with University of Minnesota policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of EOAA and a demonstrated commitment to advancing a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Experience advising supervisors on policy and procedure.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft, particularly in an entry and audit role.
  • Demonstrated solid understanding of employee relations, employment law, compensation, and employee engagement.
  • Experience supporting HR in a unionized environment.
