About the position

The HR Generalist position is a full-time role based in Detroit, MI, primarily focused on supporting various human resources functions under the direction of the Human Resources Manager. This role encompasses a wide range of HR-related activities, including staffing, benefits administration, employee relations, and training. The HR Generalist is responsible for maintaining a positive employee relations environment and ensuring that all employee relations issues are addressed promptly and courteously. Key responsibilities include administering employee benefit programs such as medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement plans. The HR Generalist will facilitate the annual open enrollment process, manage attendance systems, and assist with tracking leaves of absence. Additionally, the role involves staffing activities, including processing Position Approval Requisitions (PARs), screening and interviewing candidates, and facilitating new hire orientations. The HR Generalist will also respond to unemployment claims, conduct exit interviews, and maintain HRIS records while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. The position requires the HR Generalist to consult with management on HR guidance, manage complex employee relations issues, and conduct thorough investigations. The role also involves providing performance management guidance, improving work relationships, and assisting with training needs and evaluations. The HR Generalist will play a crucial role in ensuring safety standards are met within the workplace and will be responsible for investigating reports of injuries and accidents. Overall, this position is vital in fostering a supportive and compliant HR environment within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Administers employee benefit programs including medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement.
  • Facilitates the annual open enrollment process and initial enrollment meetings.
  • Processes enrollment/change forms and payroll deductions, ensuring COBRA compliance.
  • Manages the attendance count system and assists with tracking all leaves of absence.
  • Processes Position Approval Requisitions (PARs) and Recruiting Authorizations (RAs).
  • Screens, tests, interviews, and selects external job applicants; processes internal job postings.
  • Facilitates new hire orientation and processes new hire paperwork.
  • Responds to unemployment claims and conducts exit interviews.
  • Maintains HRIS records and compiles reports from databases.
  • Generates and processes Employee Change Notices (ECNs) for job and pay changes.
  • Assembles and maintains employee personnel records in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Consults with management, providing HR guidance when appropriate.
  • Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues and conducts investigations.
  • Provides performance management guidance to line management.
  • Works closely with management and employees to improve work relationships and increase productivity.
  • Administers contract terms for new hires, promotions, and transfers.
  • Assists international employees with expatriate assignments and related HR matters.
  • Identifies training needs for employees and evaluates training programs.
  • Assists with employee and labor relations, including conducting internal investigations and grievance administration.
  • Displays a positive attitude towards safety and complies with all safety policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of direct human resources experience with increasing responsibility.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply applicable laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and HRIS database systems.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State employment laws.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English is a plus.
