About the position

The Human Resources Generalist acts as the ‘customer-facing' business partner to the leadership team and employee population of the assigned business unit and/or geographic area of responsibility. This role will provide expertise and direct support in the areas of employee relations, performance management, recruiting and selection, compensation/benefits administration, and employee training/development. The HR Generalist will be the primary point of contact to the assigned ‘customer' base, from the standpoint of managing the administration of human resources policies, procedures and programs. The number of employees this position supports could exceed 1000, depending on the seasonal and operational needs of the organization. The HR Generalist will leverage the HR ‘specialist' team at Headquarters, as needed, to deliver high quality HR services, and help execute the organization's overall HR strategy. The HR Generalist will be based in his/her city of residence, with frequent travel throughout the assigned region. This position will report directly to the Employee Relations Director in our Austin National Headquarters. Essential Functions include partnering with local program management to communicate human resources policies, procedures, programs and laws, strategizing with Senior Staff to support HR needs, diagnosing and handling employee relations issues, and working with corporate management to ensure compliance with policies. The HR Generalist will also conduct investigations, respond to grievances, monitor employee satisfaction, and lead recruiting and staffing functions for the assigned region. This role requires maintaining awareness of HR-related laws and practices, assisting with HR-related education and training, and providing support to the Headquarters Human Resource Department as needed. The HR Generalist is expected to cultivate a culture that emphasizes responsiveness, innovation, diversity, and excellence, while compiling and submitting reports from various database systems.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with local program management to communicate human resources policies, procedures, programs, and laws.
  • Strategize and partner with Senior Staff to support the HR needs of the assigned line of business.
  • Diagnose and successfully handle employee relations issues and organizational development issues.
  • Work with the corporate management team and legal department to review, update, and roll-out all policies, ensuring compliance.
  • Coordinate with the legal department and other HR personnel to maintain compliance within employee leave policies and laws.
  • Act as a liaison between program locations and the corporate office to review and respond to third-party claims.
  • Conduct investigations and respond to grievances in collaboration with site management, providing a resolution plan for employee complaints.
  • Determine and recommend employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship.
  • Assist in conducting periodic surveys to measure employee satisfaction and engagement.
  • Act as steward of the organization's performance management process, training program management in application and monitoring compliance.
  • Monitor and advise managers in the discipline system of the company.
  • Review all management recommendations for employment terminations with corporate HR and legal department staff.
  • Maintain awareness of HR-related laws and practices, providing suitable interpretation to management and employees.
  • Assist with HR-related education/training, communication, and awareness efforts.
  • Lead recruiting and staffing function for assigned region, supporting management in sourcing, screening, and hiring candidates.
  • Serve as local contact for benefits education and assist with Open Enrollment, leveraging Benefits Specialists as needed.
  • Provide support and back-up to the Headquarters Human Resource Department as needed.
  • Cultivate a culture that emphasizes responsiveness, innovation, diversity, and excellence.
  • Compile and submit reports from various database systems.

Requirements

  • Human Resources Generalist experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Associates Degree in a Business-related field, with a minimum of six (6) years of experience as a Human Resources Generalist or other HR professional.
  • Full-scope HR Generalist experience with a heavy emphasis on Employee Relations activities, including at least 3 years of experience working directly with employees and supervisors.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain partnerships and solid working relationships with management and employees at all levels.
  • Action-oriented, with the ability to operate successfully in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, handle adversity and frequent change, and balance workload and competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently, without daily direction.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to make formal presentations in front of large audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, and ability to learn and navigate a Human Resource Information System.
  • Ability to turn programmatic and operational concepts into employee training programs and facilitate training to diverse audiences.
  • Customer-service focus and strong influencing skills, with demonstrated experience dealing successfully with internal and external customers.
  • Experience in administering human resources policies, programs, and practices, including planning, organizing, developing, implementing, and coordinating.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to travel locally by car, potentially up to 50%; other domestic travel may be required up to 10%.
  • Must be able to work a flexible, sometimes unpredictable schedule that could include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Nice-to-haves

  • HRCI certification (minimum of PHR level)
  • Prior experience with non-profit/social services/school environments in an HR capacity.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).
