About the position

The HR Generalist - Payroll Services at the College of Southern Maryland is responsible for managing payroll processes while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. This role involves maintaining accurate payroll records, overseeing payroll tax remittances, and managing contributions to retirement plans for approximately 1,200 employees. The position requires a specialized understanding of compensation, benefits, tax compliance, and accounting principles, and involves collaboration with Human Resources and Accounting departments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bi-weekly payroll processes including payroll calculation and verification.
  • Manage the issuance of manual payroll checks and ensure accurate data entries from Human Resources.
  • Verify payroll tax withholding figures and reconcile discrepancies in the general ledger.
  • Submit timely payments of Federal and State withholding taxes and retirement accounts.
  • Analyze and review electronic timesheets for non-exempt employees and monitor student worker statuses.
  • Provide backup support for various administrative tasks and assist during audits.
  • Generate reports for Maryland Higher Education Commission and oversee payroll document retention.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in a related field.
  • Three years of payroll processing experience.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Four years of payroll processing experience.
  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)
