About the position

We are currently seeking an HR Generalist to join our Eastern Region Office located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This office supports over 4500 employees at various locations across the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic area. As the Region HR Generalist, you will be part of a multi-person Human Resources team that provides advice to leaders on complex employee relations matters. Your role will involve conducting fact-finding investigations and utilizing a consultative approach to problem-solve, influence resolution, and mitigate risk. You will also help manage complex leave of absences and engage with the field to identify talent and develop future leaders. At Waste Connections, culture is a critical component of our success. Our managers in the field operate within a relatively decentralized structure but look to our regional administrative office for certain centralized services, including human resources. In this position, you will coach and support field leadership with team member performance management issues, including coaching conversations, investigations, and progressive discipline. You will initiate and complete workplace investigations, advise and manage through complex Leave of Absence issues, and assist with integrating newly acquired companies and employees. Additionally, you will respond to internal and external inquiries regarding policies, procedures, programs, and other people matters, and participate in projects and planning that support employee development and success. You will also assist with planning and implementing strategic HR initiatives related to leadership development and culture.

Responsibilities

  • Coach and support field leadership with team member performance management issues, including coaching conversations, investigations, and progressive discipline.
  • Initiate and complete workplace investigations.
  • Advise and manage through complex Leave of Absence issues.
  • Assist with integrating newly acquired companies/employees.
  • Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding policies, procedures, programs, and other people matters.
  • Participate in projects and planning that support employee development and success.
  • Assist with planning and implementing strategic HR initiatives related to leadership development and culture.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3+ years progressively responsible human resources experience.
  • Deep experience in initiating and completing workplace investigations.
  • Strong knowledge of US employment laws.
  • Self-driven project management skills and the ability to manage multiple matters and projects while demonstrating sound judgment, decision making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven success in influencing and serving employees at all levels of the organization through collaboration and communication.
  • Ability to travel up to 40% often without advance planning, which could involve overnight travel as well as day trips.
  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality, even in high stress situations.
  • Strong influencing skills with proven success in influencing employees at all levels of the organization through collaboration and communication.
  • Interpersonal and organizational consulting, delivery and facilitation skills.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Management or related field strongly preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • PHR/SPHR (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP) preferred.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
