About the position

Waste Connections is currently seeking an on-site HR Generalist to join our Western Region Office located in Vancouver, Washington. This office supports over 4000 employees across Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, and Idaho. As the Region HR Generalist, you will be part of a four-person Human Resources team that provides advice to leaders on complex employee relations matters. Your role will involve conducting fact-finding investigations and utilizing a consultative approach to problem-solve, influence resolution, and mitigate risk. You will also help manage complex leave of absences, provide guidance and advice to field leadership, and assist in identifying talent and developing future leaders. At Waste Connections, culture is a critical component of our success. Our managers in the field operate within a relatively decentralized structure but look to our regional administrative office for certain centralized services, including human resources. In this position, you will participate in projects and planning that support employee development and success. You will coach and support field leadership with team member performance management issues, including coaching conversations, investigations, and progressive discipline. Additionally, you will advise and manage through complex Leave of Absence issues, assist with integrating newly acquired companies and employees, and respond to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, programs, and other people matters. You will also assist with planning and implementing strategic HR initiatives related to leadership development and culture, and provide training and informative presentations to field leadership. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in projects and planning that support employee development and success.
  • Coaches and supports field leadership with team member performance management issues, including coaching conversations, investigations, and progressive discipline.
  • Advises and manages through complex Leave of Absence issues.
  • Assists with integrating newly acquired companies and employees.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, programs, and other people matters.
  • Assists with planning and implementing strategic HR initiatives related to leadership development and culture.
  • Provides training and informative presentations to field leadership.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years in an HR role (or related experience).
  • Advanced knowledge of US employment laws.
  • Advanced knowledge of state specific employment laws, specifically; Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho and Nevada.
  • Strong communication skills with proven success in influencing employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% to the six Western Region states.
  • Ability to remain confidential with sensitive information.
  • Interpersonal and organizational consulting skills, along with delivery and facilitation skills.
  • Ability and skills to manage multiple projects and initiatives.
  • PHR/SPHR (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP) strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources (or related field) required.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
