About the position

The HR Human Resources Generalist at Turner Construction Company plays a pivotal role in providing guidance to assigned business units on various Human Resources functions, including recruiting, employee relations, talent management, training, and benefits. This position serves as a liaison for employees and supports key management initiatives, ensuring that the company culture, values, and Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) activities are represented across the organization. The HR Generalist is expected to actively participate in anti-racism learning and advocate for equity, employee health, and wellbeing. In this role, the HR Generalist will administer and communicate HR-related programs, policies, and procedures to the assigned business unit, providing knowledgeable and timely responses to employee inquiries. Establishing a trusting environment is crucial, as it allows employees to engage openly with HR. The HR Generalist will connect in-person with employees regularly, advocating and providing guidance to Business Unit (BU) leadership on people-related needs and concerns. Continuous improvement is a key focus, and the HR Generalist will contribute new ideas to enhance the overall effectiveness of the HR team, applying basic lean concepts and practices to work efficiently and reduce waste. The HR Generalist will manage Talent Acquisition (TA) activities, proactively overseeing sourcing, recruitment, and onboarding of interns, college, and experienced hires. This includes establishing and maintaining professional relationships with external agencies for candidate referrals, creating candidate pipelines, and reinforcing training on EEO and harassment policies. The role also involves managing college and career fair activities, interviewing candidates, and supporting offer decisions. The HR Generalist will serve as the primary candidate contact, coordinating the employee onboarding program and conducting new hire orientation and other HR-related training. Additionally, the HR Generalist will provide guidance to hiring managers on executing offers, facilitate new hire onboarding processes, and manage immigration and work authorization-related processes. The role includes supporting activities related to employee discipline, performance improvement plans, and employee relations counseling under the guidance of HR management. The HR Generalist will also assist with succession planning and prepare materials for discussions, ensuring that the HR function aligns with the strategic goals of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to assigned business units for Human Resources functions including recruiting, employee relations, talent management, training, and benefits.
  • Serve as liaison for employees and support key management initiatives.

  • Extend offers for employment and coordinate employee onboarding programs.
  • Serve as escalation point of contact for interns and manage internship programs.
  • Maintain accurate and timely applicant tracking data and manage the end-to-end hiring process.
  • Promote activities for Employee Referral Program and support strategic staffing decisions.
  • Serve as first point of contact for BU relocations and transfers.
  • Manage immigration and work authorization-related processes for employees.
  • Support activities relating to employee discipline and performance improvement plans.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited program in Human Resources or related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Professional in Human Resources (HRCI PHR) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM CP) certification preferred.
  • Experience in construction or large organizations (10,000+ employees) preferred.
  • Knowledge of Human Resources policies, operations, and processes.
  • High degree of integrity and ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Professional verbal and written business communication skills.
  • Effective active listening skills and follow-up practices.
  • Strong organizational, time management, prioritization, and project management skills.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement methods and tools.
  • Solid problem-solving and analytical capabilities, familiar with basic lean culture and concepts.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all employee levels and management.
  • Work independently with little or no supervision and collaborate with others.
  • Embrace change and be a quick learner to adopt process and technology enhancements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft suite of applications with advanced MS Excel skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in construction or construction-related industries.
  • Familiarity with Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), preferably SAP.
