The HR Pro 1-Generalist position at the University of Minnesota serves as a vital resource for supervisors, administrators, staff, and students within the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, benefits administration, leave of absence management, payroll processing, and performance management. The HR Generalist will work closely with the HR Director to create and implement best practices in human resources, ensuring that the needs of the organization are met while promoting a diverse and inclusive workplace. In this position, the HR Generalist will advise supervisors on recruitment and hiring procedures, assist in determining appropriate job classifications, and recommend pay rates that consider equity. The role involves editing job descriptions, drafting offer letters, and posting open positions to the online recruiting system. The HR Generalist will also serve as the primary contact for employee benefits, assist with onboarding and offboarding processes, and ensure compliance with various policies and contracts. Additionally, the HR Generalist will act as the first point of contact for HR-related questions from staff and supervisors, providing policy information on issues such as layoffs, overtime, and FMLA. This position requires a strong understanding of employee relations and the ability to escalate conflicts and diversity issues to the HR Director while continuing to assist in their resolution. The HR Generalist will also manage payroll data, verify employment information, and provide training on payroll best practices. Overall, this role is essential in supporting the HR functions of the Global Programs and Strategy Alliance and contributing to the university's mission of fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Advise supervisors on recruitment and hiring procedures and best practices.
  • Work with hiring managers to determine appropriate job classification and recommend pay rates considering equity.
  • Edit job descriptions as needed and draft offer letters.
  • Post open positions to the online recruiting system and assist with reviewing applications.
  • Serve as the point of contact for candidate questions about the position and the GPS Alliance.
  • Coordinate and deliver HR portions of onboarding and offboarding processes.
  • Serve as the primary employee benefits contact and assist supervisors with reclassifications.
  • Gather and analyze data necessary for retention and equity salary increases.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of market refinement salary structure changes.
  • Ensure compliance with Bargaining Unit contracts, Civil Service rules, student employment, P&A policies, and annual salary administration.
  • Process visa applications for GPS Alliance staff in collaboration with International Student and Scholar Services.
  • Provide policy information regarding layoff/non-renewal, overtime, FMLA, etc.
  • Assist with annual performance appraisal administration and deliver training related to HR best practices.
  • Escalate conflicts and diversity issues to the HR director while assisting in resolution as necessary.
  • Review and analyze payroll data and reports to ensure accuracy and verify employment/payroll data into the HRMS system.
  • Answer payroll questions and serve as a resource to supervisors and employees on payroll policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and manage HR reports and work on HR special projects/committees as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or a related field, or a combination of related education and work experience totaling four years.
  • Experience with HRMS appointment and/or payroll processes.
  • Working knowledge of and experience with employee benefit programs.
  • Experience with staffing and recruiting with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
  • Customer service experience in an organization with diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience handling confidential and time-sensitive materials.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple requests.
