About the position

The Human Resources Specialist position at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) is a permanent part-time role, requiring 30 hours of work per week. The HR Specialist will be responsible for the supplemental pay process, managing dual employment, and consulting with departments to ensure compliance with policies. This role also involves verifying independent contractors, managing the annual distribution of Conflict of Interest forms, and overseeing the volunteer process. The HR Specialist will track and manage secondary employment policies, administer the External Professional Activities for Pay, and conduct background checks. Additionally, the position includes consulting on compensation and salary adjustments, providing HRIS support, and serving as one of the Learning Management System (LMS) administrators. The role plays a crucial part in onboarding new employees and ensuring that all HR processes align with the policies of the Office of State Human Resources (OSHR) and the University of North Carolina (UNC) System. Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive HR administrative support to the NCSSM HR team.
  • Maintain employee records and manage correspondence.
  • Oversee the supplemental pay process and manage dual employment.
  • Handle various HR employment actions in accordance with policy.
  • Consult with departments on compensation and salary adjustments.
  • Verify independent contractors and manage Conflict of Interest forms.
  • Administer the External Professional Activities for Pay and conduct background checks.
  • Track and manage secondary employment policy and forms.
  • Serve as one of the Learning Management System (LMS) administrators.
  • Play an active role in onboarding new employees.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in a human resources generalist role.
  • High level working expertise using various software systems such as Google Docs, Word, Excel, and web-based data systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to use judgment and apply policies, procedures, and regulations in processing personnel transactions.
  • Proven ability to navigate federal compliance processes for work eligibility and identity verification through the I-9 and E-Verification portal.
  • General knowledge of academic environments.
