About the position

The Benefits Specialist at Fort Wayne Community Schools is responsible for managing and supporting the district's group insurance programs. This role involves assisting employees with enrollment and continuation of coverage for health, life, and disability plans, while serving as a technical resource and liaison for employee insurance inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Process day-to-day operations of FWCS group insurance programs, including enrollment, billing, adjustment, and record-keeping functions.
  • Distribute, collect, review, prepare, process, and evaluate enrollment and other insurance forms and applications for health, life, and disability plans.
  • Serve as a resource to employees and retirees regarding employee insurance programs, responding to inquiries and providing technical information.
  • Coordinate and conduct open enrollment activities for District employees, assisting with enrollment forms and applications.
  • Process benefit adjustments for ongoing insurance coverage, including changes in beneficiary information and disability benefits applications.
  • Compile and maintain records, reports, and files related to employee benefits and insurance programs.
  • Receive, process, and verify insurance billings for payment, ensuring accuracy and reconciling discrepancies.
  • Input, update, and extract benefits data in the assigned computer system, generating reports as needed.
  • Conduct benefit orientations for new employees and distribute informational materials regarding insurance options.
  • Maintain current knowledge of insurance policies and coordinate updates as necessary.
  • Act as a liaison between employees, insurance representatives, and outside agencies to resolve issues and concerns.
  • Attend meetings and workshops to stay informed about applicable laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in employee benefit administration or a related field.
  • Strong office, computer, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of technical aspects, methods, processes, principles, practices, procedures, and terminology used in employee benefits.
