About The Position

The Human Resources Consultant at the University of Minnesota's School of Dentistry will provide strategic HR consultation and support to the school's leadership and community. This role involves one-on-one coaching for department chairs, directors, and staff, assisting in problem identification and resolution. The consultant will also serve as a backup to the Director of Human Resources and will be responsible for ensuring compliance with HR policies and practices, particularly in employee relations and contract interpretation.

Requirements

  • BA/BS degree in human resources or related field plus six (6) years of human resources experience, including problem-solving, performance management, compensation, and investigations.

  • Professional human resources credentials such as SHRM-CP/PHR, SHRM-SCP/SPHR.
  • Experience in human resources in higher education and/or the public sector.
  • Experience conducting employment and EOAA investigations and responding to complaints and grievances.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an HR mentor with day-to-day oversight of HR Partners.
  • Responsible for high-profile and complex employee relations investigations.
  • Solve problems and make recommendations on complex issues.
  • Analyze information promptly.
  • Build collaborative relationships.
  • Provide oversight and recommendations on policy and procedure.
  • Develop effective recruitment strategies.
  • Consult on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Serve as HR liaison for search committees.
  • Advise on high-risk employment situations.
  • Ensure legal compliance.
  • Advise and consult on performance and discipline issues.
  • Assist with Employee Engagement Planning.
  • Meet with supervisors, staff, and faculty to investigate and recommend solutions for workplace behavior issues.
  • Provide coaching and training related to performance management and discipline within the guidelines of various employee groups.
  • Explain, interpret, and advise on employment laws, labor contracts, and University policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate problem-solving and dispute resolution between employees and managers.
  • Represent management in grievance processes.
  • Collaborate with University offices to resolve complex issues.
  • Conduct investigations, prepare findings, and recommend outcomes related to policy violations, harassment, discrimination, and unprofessional behavior claims.
  • Function as a resource to faculty and staff on terms and conditions of employment.
  • Partner with units to develop, plan, and implement organizational structures in response to programmatic needs or funding changes.
  • Advise hiring units on hiring, terminations, compensation, and benefits.
  • Identify the need for external consultation and recommend appropriate resources.
  • Collaborate with the HR team to identify HR-related training needs.
  • Design and conduct tailored training programs for the College departments.
  • Utilize resources from the University's Office of Human Resources to assist with training.
  • Facilitate structured meetings as needed.
