About the position

This is a remote role that may be hired in several markets across the United States, but it does require quarterly travel to our corporate office in Raleigh, NC. The Human Resources Counsel - Employment Law position provides legal advice and counsel regarding Human Resources (HR) legal matters. The role serves as a resource on legal issues related to policies, employee relations, compliance, and processes. The successful candidate will provide support in negotiating the resolution of disputes or claims and will be responsible for drafting contracts and other legal instruments utilized throughout the bank. A strong knowledge of laws, regulations, and business operations is essential to address complex legal matters effectively. In this role, the candidate will provide legal support to HR Governance management and associates to minimize legal risks and losses. This includes consulting with both internal and external counsel on the resolution of legal matters. The position also involves performing a range of tasks and consulting with HR, effectively communicating instructions on handling specific transactions or sensitive matters. The candidate will develop and implement policies and procedures utilized across the enterprise, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Additionally, the role requires drafting, negotiating, and maintaining contracts or other transaction-specific legal documentation, as well as developing new legal forms and templates. The candidate will monitor federal and state laws, regulations, and court opinions to determine their impact on HR legal matters and will be responsible for translating complex legal matters into easily understood concepts for associates.

Responsibilities

  • Provides legal support to HR Governance management and associates to minimize legal risks and losses.
  • Consults with both internal and external counsel on the resolution of legal matters.
  • Performs a range of tasks and consulting with HR, effectively communicating instructions on handling specific transactions or sensitive matters.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures utilized across the enterprise.
  • Drafts, negotiates, and maintains contracts or other transaction-specific legal documentation.
  • Develops new legal forms and templates.
  • Monitors federal and state laws, regulations, and court opinions to determine their impact on HR legal matters.
  • Translates complex legal matters into easily understood concepts for associates.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) Degree required.
  • 6 years of experience in General Practice or in-house specific to employment law required.
  • Preference for candidates admitted to the California bar and/or with extensive understanding of California employment law.
  • Willingness to work Pacific Time Zone hours.

Nice-to-haves

  • In-house advice and counsel experience in employment law at a large financial institution.
  • Broad experience in risk-adjusted advice and counsel on employment law related matters including performance management, terminations, leaves of absence and accommodations, workplace investigations, benefits plans, executive compensation, M&A, immigration, wage and hour, labor, restrictive covenants, and employment litigation.
