About the position

The Human Resources Generalist - Benefits position at Youngstown State University involves overseeing various benefit projects and serving as a primary point of contact for employees regarding benefits management. The role requires a strong understanding of human resources processes and the ability to communicate effectively with employees and external agencies. The incumbent will assist in policy development, provide training, and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees ongoing and special benefit projects in the assigned benefit program area.
  • Serves as a liaison and responds to inquiries from employees, administration, applicants, and external agencies.
  • Supports employees in benefits management throughout the employment life cycle.
  • Communicates benefit changes or new program implementations to the university community.
  • Reconciles premium billing statements and develops presentations and training sessions for employee benefits coverage.
  • Trains employees on navigation through HRIS and collaborates to identify training needs.
  • Supports labor relations functions as needed and enters transactions into HRIS.
  • Instructs employees on proper procedures for completing forms and updates them on new procedures.
  • Prepares and processes confidential documents and coordinates special projects.
  • Performs calculations to ensure accuracy and integrity of information in HRIS.
  • Administers Flexible Spending 125 Plan and manages all attendant processes.
  • Provides input on new program/policy design and maintains databases.
  • Acts as a liaison for interpreting policies and regulations related to the assigned area.
  • Conducts public relations activities and assists in preparing procedures manuals and forms.
  • Maintains filing systems and compiles information for internal and external reports.
  • Performs clerical duties such as filing, sorting mail, and operating office equipment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED and at least four years of experience in human resources administration or a related field.
  • Completion of at least a bachelor's degree and two years of experience in human resources administration or a related field.
  • Knowledge of assigned benefit program areas, federal and state laws, and human resources processes.
  • Skill in operating a personal computer and HR software programs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, and prepare accurate reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, benefits administration, or a related field.
  • Professional experience in human resources or benefits administration.
  • Certificate from a nationally recognized Human Resources Organization such as SHRM or PHR.
  • Experience using Banner, Workday, or other benefit management systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with collective bargaining agreements and/or labor unions.
