About the position

The Human Resources Generalist I position is a first-level professional role within the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC), specifically located at the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility in Walnut Grove, Mississippi. This role is accountable for a variety of professional duties in the realm of human resources, acting as an adviser in one or more areas of HR. Under direct supervision, the individual in this position will engage in various agency human resources programs, policies, and procedures that encompass recruitment and selection, classification, salary analysis, benefits administration, appointments, and performance evaluations. It is crucial that all work performed is in compliance with relevant federal and state laws, ensuring that the agency adheres to legal and ethical standards in its HR practices. In addition to the core responsibilities, the Human Resources Generalist I may also be tasked with preparing reports that can be utilized by managers and Statewide HR for the purpose of managing human resource costs effectively. This position may involve directing and reviewing the work of lower-level employees, particularly in areas such as payroll and related actions. Key duties include conducting new hire orientations, assisting with recruitment processes, verifying employment and educational backgrounds, coordinating interviews, and performing other assigned tasks that contribute to the overall efficiency of the HR department. To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly to changing situations, maintain a courteous demeanor, and uphold strict confidentiality regarding sensitive information. Proficiency in computer skills is essential, particularly in the use of KRONOS and the MS Office Suite, which includes Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. A solid understanding of state employee benefits policies and procedures is also necessary for effective performance in this position.
