About the position

The Human Resources Generalist/Benefits Specialist at Hospice Of The Chesapeake is responsible for providing functional and administrative support to the Human Resources Department. This role focuses on recruitment and onboarding, compensation and benefits administration, employee engagement and retention, payroll preparation, and general HR administrative support.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Talent Acquisition Specialist in the recruitment process, including scheduling interviews and preparing interview packets.
  • Process new hire documents and perform pre-employment checks, including background checks and licensure verification.
  • Coordinate onboarding for contract, agency, and temporary staff, ensuring all required paperwork is completed.
  • Maintain candidate and new hire information in the internal ATS and online training system.
  • Facilitate monthly New Hire Orientation sessions and conduct employment reference checks.
  • Support HR compliance with organizational policies and labor laws, and maintain employee files.
  • Assist with payroll preparation and respond to payroll-related inquiries from employees.
  • Administer health and welfare plans, including enrollments and changes, and support Open Enrollment activities.
  • Assist with employee engagement, DEIA, and retention programs, and support the Director in setting retention goals.

Requirements

  • Associates degree in Human Resources, Business, Human Services or related field, plus a minimum of one-year Human Resources experience desired.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and human resources job experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with database management and HRIS/Payroll systems.
  • Knowledge of employment and labor law.
  • Experience in employee engagement and retention programs.
