About the position

The Human Resources Generalist at the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's mission to advocate for workers' rights and promote social justice. This position is based in Washington, DC, and offers an annual salary of $91,872. The HR Generalist will be responsible for managing the full recruitment life cycle, which includes sourcing, screening, interviewing, and making hiring decisions in collaboration with hiring managers. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in talent acquisition and will be expected to develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract top talent from diverse backgrounds. In addition to talent acquisition, the HR Generalist will provide support in various HR functions, including employee relations, performance management, training and development, and HR compliance. The role requires a proactive approach to HR administration, including maintaining accurate employee records, assisting with onboarding processes, and providing guidance on HR-related issues. The HR Generalist will also ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, staying informed about changes in regulations and updating policies as necessary. The position requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as the HR Generalist will interact with employees at all levels of the organization. The ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion is essential. The HR Generalist will also assist in identifying training needs and developing programs to enhance employee skills and knowledge, coordinating training sessions and workshops as needed. This role reports to the Director of Human Resources and requires coordination with multiple stakeholders, necessitating a self-motivated individual who can work independently.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies to attract top talent.
  • Source candidates through various channels, including job boards, social media, networking events, and employee referrals.
  • Screen resumes and conduct initial phone screenings to assess candidates' qualifications.
  • Coordinate and conduct interviews with hiring managers to evaluate candidates' fit for the position and company culture.
  • Manage the offer process, including negotiating salary and benefits packages.
  • Conduct background checks and reference checks for potential hires.
  • Ensure a positive candidate experience throughout the recruitment process.
  • Assist in developing and implementing HR policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records.
  • Handle employee onboarding and orientation processes.
  • Provide guidance and support to employees on HR-related issues.
  • Assist in employee relations matters, including conflict resolution and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Assist with performance management processes, including goal setting, performance reviews, and development plans as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations.
  • Stay informed about changes in employment laws and update policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Assist in conducting investigations into employee complaints or violations of company policies as needed.
  • Assist in identifying training needs and developing training programs to enhance employee skills and knowledge.
  • Coordinate training sessions and workshops as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent experience.
  • Four (4) years of related experience in Human Resources, preferably in a labor organization or a progressive organization or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Proven experience as an HR Generalist with a focus on talent acquisition.
  • Strong understanding of full cycle recruitment processes and best practices.
  • Experience using applicant tracking systems (ATS) and other HR software.
  • Skill in the use of modern office equipment including personal computers and associated SEIU software, including the Microsoft Office and Google product suites.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Knowledge of employment laws and regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification is a plus but not required.
