About the position

At Smithfield Foods, we are seeking a dedicated HR professional to assist the site HR leader in strategically driving the success of the HR department. This role is pivotal in maintaining a positive labor and employee relations environment within the business unit. The HR professional will facilitate workplace investigations and inquiries, ensuring that employee needs are addressed and that any policy infractions are managed appropriately. A key responsibility will be to ensure that hourly production employee retention is maintained at an acceptable level, which may involve data entry into the time and attendance system and managing job and vacation bid processes. The successful candidate will effectively communicate and demonstrate Smithfield's ROI guiding principles, which include Responsibility, Operational Excellence, and Innovation. This role will also involve collecting and analyzing HR data to make informed recommendations to the site HR leader regarding workforce planning. Additionally, the HR professional will conduct orientations and support on-the-job training initiatives, while also assisting in the development and execution of the location's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) initiatives and Affirmative Action Plan. The HR professional will provide necessary resources to empower employees with knowledge about FMLA, LOA, ADA, and Workday resources. They may also assist the site HR leader in providing position and performance guidance based on human resources policies and procedures, including collective bargaining agreements. This includes participating in grievance meetings, managing records, addressing employee inquiries, and engaging in community relations activities. Leadership and direction will be provided to junior staff in servicing employee needs and performing overall HR functions for the business unit. The role requires active listening and the ability to provide constructive feedback, recognition, and gratitude to employees. The HR professional will serve as a visible business partner, regularly visiting the production floor to engage with employees at all levels and relate comfortably with diverse groups. They will also assist in preparing and overseeing HR-related compliance audits and maintain the Human Resource Information System records while compiling reports from the database. Partnering with Talent Acquisition to create and manage requisition creations and ensuring compliance with federal and state employment regulations will also be part of the responsibilities. The HR professional will assist with job fairs, training workshops, labor relations, and payroll processing as needed.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Human Resources, Business Management, or related field.
  • 2+ years of related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of employment law practices.
  • Experience in administration of benefits, compensation, and other programs.
  • Knowledge and use of commonly used HRIS such as Workday, payroll/timekeeping systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Respectful, approachable, and team-oriented with strong working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous Workday/HCM system experience preferred.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or another language preferred.
