About the position

The Human Resources Generalist plays a vital role in supporting our organization's mission by providing comprehensive HR support to employees and leadership. Collaborating closely with Directors, Managers, and the CEO, this role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities. These include facilitating a smooth onboarding experience for new hires, managing employee benefits programs, overseeing recruitment and employment processes, and ensuring compliance with all applicable employment laws. The HR Generalist acts as a trusted resource and advisor, fostering a positive and productive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provides confidential counseling to managers and employees, consistent with policies as they relate to work improvement, corrective action, interpersonal, work team issues or human resources policy interpretations.
  • Mentor and develop the Human Resources Assistant, contributing to the growth and effectiveness of the HR team as a whole.
  • Makes recommendations to implement strategies focusing on strengthening positive culture.
  • Assists with management training.
  • Responsible for benefit administration to include enrollments, terminations, claims resolution, change reporting, and communicating one-on-one with employees regarding their employee benefits.
  • Assist directors/managers with open enrollment paperwork; mandatory employee recordkeeping paperwork and due diligence etc.
  • Maintains employee files relating to new-hire, personnel, payroll documents, benefits, workers compensation, leaves of absence and on-going employment requirements.
  • Reviews corrective action notices for appropriateness and follows up with management.
  • Accesses various human resources databases to process, retrieve and maintain all relevant human resource documentation for all employees.
  • Responds to a variety of telephone and in-person inquiries regarding policies, procedures, benefit plans and compensation processes.
  • Accesses the electronic applicant tracking system intermittently to retrieve and process internal and external applications open positions.
  • Reviews departments' salary structures to ensure equality is maintained when communicating job offers to candidates.
  • Schedules various tests/background checks required for the post offer employment process.
  • Conducts audits of completion rates for annual performance management process, salary administration process, employee engagement survey participation rates and ongoing reviews or updates of service groups' impact plans.
  • Reviews employee data change forms submitted by employees for completeness and accuracy and communicates approval or denial of change to accounting manager within 48 hours.
  • Prepares salary analysis for individual or job class equality adjustment requests then makes recommendations.
  • Conducts investigations on all employee related issues regarding employee grievances, disciplinary actions at the suspension or termination stage and repairs findings for human resources director and legal counsel.
  • Coordinates and participates recruitment, job fairs and other candidate outreach activities to meet ongoing staffing needs.
  • Conducts new hire general orientations well as leads the exit interview process.
  • Performs job analysis and/or audits when requested by the CEO, e.g., metrics.
  • Assists Directors/Managers with handling problem resolutions, EEOC, Right of Review or any other legal matters.
  • Assists management with assessment of performance deficiencies and development of plans to address; develops a strong presence and good interpersonal relationships with all levels of employees.
  • Coaches management and serves as a witness/proxy in preparation of scheduled unemployment hearings.
  • Knowledge and administration of CAL-OSHA, Federal OSHA, I-9 preparation and audits, E-Verify, worker's compensation claims paperwork and safety compliance.
  • Knowledge and administration of FMLA, CFRA, PDL and other Federal and State leave provisions.
  • Assist Risk Management/QA/QI team with internal safety programs.
  • Word processes policies, procedures, forms, handbooks and manuals for H.R. as requested.
  • Perform other tasks as required by management.

Requirements

  • 3+ years' of Human Resources experience
  • Experience with a Non-profit agency and licensed community a plus
  • Proficiency in benefits administration
  • Proficient knowledge of Federal and California employment laws and practices
  • Proficient knowledge of the California Workers' Compensation and applicable regulations
  • Proficient knowledge of EDD and State Disability Insurance programs and applicable benefits laws
  • Employee relations experience, preferably with training in best practices
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of integrity in handling confidential information
  • Excellent communication skills - interpersonal, verbal, written, and presentation
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel
  • Good organizational skills
  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • HR Certifications or other HR related education preferred
