About the position

The Human Resources Generalist at California Environmental Voters plays a crucial role in supporting the organization's mission to address the climate crisis while promoting social and environmental justice. This full-time, exempt position is based in Oakland, CA, and offers a competitive salary ranging from $65,000 to $80,000. The HR Generalist will report to the Administration & HR Senior Manager and will be responsible for a variety of HR functions, including recruitment, benefits administration, employee engagement, and compliance with HR policies and regulations. The work schedule is designed to promote work-life balance, featuring a four-day work week with two days in the office and two days remote, although flexibility may be required during peak periods. The organization is committed to creating a workplace culture that values equity and inclusion, particularly for Black, Indigenous, and people of color. The HR Generalist will be instrumental in developing and implementing HR policies that reflect these values, ensuring that all employees are treated fairly and have access to the resources they need to thrive. This role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a strong ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels. The HR Generalist will also lead initiatives aimed at improving employee morale and engagement, making this a dynamic and impactful position within the organization. In addition to the core HR responsibilities, the HR Generalist will collaborate with various teams to analyze industry trends and labor market conditions, which will inform recruitment and retention strategies. The position also involves maintaining accurate employee records, conducting employment verifications, and managing employee recognition programs. Responsibilities

  • Create and update HR policies and company guidelines, ensuring compliance with standards and laws.
  • Own full-cycle recruitment, including developing recruitment plans and interview processes in collaboration with hiring managers.
  • Screen incoming resumes, coordinate interview panels, and schedule all interviews.
  • Generate official internal documents such as offer letters, interview schedules, and welcome letters.
  • Educate and train newly hired employees on HR policies, internal procedures, and regulations during onboarding.
  • Maintain digital employee files, including medical and I-9 files.
  • Gather and leverage competitive data to analyze industry trends and labor market conditions to inform recruitment and retention policies.
  • Work with the Finance team on payroll audits.
  • Perform employment verifications, including criminal background checks and previous employment.
  • Coordinate employee birthday and recognition programs.
  • Lead organization-wide employee engagement and morale events.
  • Manage the Return-to-Work Policy for employees exposed to COVID.
  • Collaborate with other HR staff to brainstorm innovative ideas to improve organizational processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • At least 3-4 years of relevant HR experience in recruiting, payroll, and HR administrative tasks.
  • Familiarity with benefits administration.
  • Experience in retention programs and leading employee engagement events.
  • Highly organized and efficient, skilled at multi-tasking and problem-solving.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Enjoy collaboration in a highly-collaborative culture.
  • Attentive listener with strong critical thinking skills.
  • High attention to detail and project management skills.
  • Strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience using HR software and HRIS databases.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field.
