About the position

The Weitz Company is seeking an experienced Human Resources (HR) Generalist to join our Employee Experience team in Des Moines, Iowa. This hybrid opportunity is designed for individuals who thrive in a collaborative, supportive, and team-oriented culture. As an HR Generalist, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our organizational culture, improving the employee experience, and building trusted relationships with leaders across various business units. Your efforts will ensure that project teams are well-positioned for success in our critical and growing business units. You will work closely with the Corporate Human Resources team to implement initiatives effectively while ensuring compliance with laws, regulations, and company policies in the respective geographic areas. In this role, you will counsel employees on career paths and personal development opportunities, as well as established policies and procedures. You will collaborate with management to identify employee development opportunities and facilitate employee enhancement initiatives, including staff recognition programs, mentoring, training initiatives, and onboarding processes for new hires. Additionally, you will manage the offboarding process, including conducting exit interviews and maintaining accurate personnel records and HRIS data. Your day-to-day support will be vital for business unit employees, assisting management with performance reviews and providing constructive feedback to direct reports. You will also facilitate employee relocations by coordinating with Corporate HR, project teams, and relocation vendors to ensure a seamless transition for employees. Tracking state and local compliance updates will be part of your responsibilities, and you may be required to travel up to 10% of the time to visit various construction project sites and offices across the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel employees on career path and personal development opportunities, established policies and procedures, and other HR related matters
  • Collaborate with business unit management to identify employee development opportunities
  • Facilitate and implement employee enhancement initiatives such as staff recognition, mentoring programs, training initiatives, and new employee onboarding
  • Facilitate the offboarding process, including separation of employment details and conducting exit interviews
  • Maintain accurate personnel records and HRIS data
  • Provide day-to-day support to business unit employees
  • Assist management with conducting effective performance reviews and providing constructive feedback to direct reports
  • Facilitate employee relocations by collaborating with Corporate HR, project teams, employees, and the company relocation vendor
  • Assist with the resolution of employee relations issues with the support of Corporate HR
  • Track applicable state and local compliance updates

Requirements

  • Four-year degree in a business-related field is required; Business Management or Human Resources focused degree is strongly preferred
  • SHRM-CP or PHR certification preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in an HR role
  • Experience with laws and regulation adherence and application, employee relations, and bolstering the employee experience
  • Construction experience is a plus
  • High attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong judgement and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to enhance the employee experience and assist in the development of team building efforts
  • Support an inclusive environment for all employees
  • Proficiency in basic computer software programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel
  • Proficiency with PDF writer and HRIS/ATS
  • Ability to learn job-related software
