About the position

The Human Resources Manager at Dairy Farmers of America is responsible for managing a wide range of HR activities across the Goshen, IN and Cass City, MI facilities. This role encompasses recruiting and onboarding, employee engagement, learning and development, compensation, benefits, wellness, payroll, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), recordkeeping, HR compliance, and potentially safety-related areas. The HR Manager will coordinate with various Centers of Expertise to ensure effective management of these activities and will serve as a knowledgeable resource for HR practices and procedures. The position requires the ability to advise leaders on complex employee relations matters and to develop and maintain effective working relationships with both employees and leadership teams, providing excellent customer service in addressing inquiries and concerns. In this role, the HR Manager will lead recruitment efforts for various positions, acting as a primary resource for hiring managers. This includes executing recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and temporary staffing plans in alignment with company standards. The HR Manager will also facilitate onboarding processes for new employees, ensuring they receive proper orientation and access to necessary resources. Additionally, the role involves leading talent management initiatives to enhance employee engagement and retention, as well as overseeing payroll processing and employee wellness activities. The HR Manager will document HR practices and procedures, support affirmative action planning, and maintain personnel files. They will also manage Worker's Compensation claims and participate in safety and risk initiatives. The position may involve supervising a small team of HR support staff, with responsibilities including work delegation, training, coaching, and performance management. Overall, this role is critical in ensuring that HR processes are executed effectively and that the organization maintains a positive and compliant work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage activities related to recruiting and onboarding, employee engagement, learning and development, compensation, benefits, wellness, payroll, DEI, recordkeeping, HR compliance, and safety for Goshen, IN and Cass City, MI facilities.
  • Lead recruitment efforts for hourly, professional, and management positions in assigned locations.
  • Function as a primary resource for hiring managers in their recruitment and staffing efforts.
  • Execute recruitment, interviewing, hiring, and temporary staffing plans in a timely manner and in accordance with DFA standards.
  • Partner with managers to update job descriptions and move candidates through the interview and selection process effectively.
  • Guide HR team in triaging critical staffing shortages as needed.
  • Partner with outside agencies to conduct recruitment events, representing DFA career opportunities.
  • Lead and execute the onboarding of new employees to ensure proper orientation and access to resources.
  • Facilitate talent management initiatives to drive engagement, build business capabilities, and enhance retention.
  • Provide leadership in the execution of HR processes, practices, and policies in partnership with leaders.
  • Communicate HR practices and procedures to leaders and support them in executing performance activities, compensation tasks, and corrective actions.
  • Develop recommendations for HR process improvement and document HR practices and procedures for consistency.
  • Provide employee relations support for leaders, consulting with employees and managers to resolve concerns and disputes.
  • Oversee payroll processing and ensure payroll processes are executed on schedule.
  • Coordinate employee wellness and engagement activities and track employee engagement action planning.
  • Create and provide people analytics to the business, including recruiting/hiring reports and turnover reports.
  • Support Affirmative Action Planning and reporting, and perform job analysis as needed.
  • Maintain personnel files and manage Worker's Compensation claims as needed.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in Human Resources, Organizational Psychology, Business Administration, or related discipline (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 5 to 8 years of progressive generalist human resources experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership attributes or supervisory experience.
  • Experience with HR information systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience in a union environment strongly preferred for supported locations.
  • Human Resources certifications preferred (e.g., PHR/SPHR, SHRM, HRCI).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Human Resources principles, concepts, and practices.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local HR and payroll requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and HRIS systems.
  • Ability to interpret and apply company policies and legal precedents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build credible relationships with managers, peers, and team members.
  • Ability to analyze data and make informed decisions based on relevant information.
  • Sound judgment, coaching, influencing, and conflict resolution skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a union environment is preferred.
  • Knowledge of HRIS systems and advanced Microsoft Office skills.
