About the position

The Human Resources Specialist 1 - HR Business Partner at Minnesota State University, Moorhead, provides advanced strategic human resources services within designated campus units. This role encompasses various HR functions including recruitment, staffing, benefits administration, classification, compensation, and employee/labor relations support. The specialist will assist with special projects, support the HR team, and ensure superior customer service to all university clientele.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate hiring for specified campus departments, advising Hiring Managers and Search Committees on best practices.
  • Monitor applicant pools in accordance with Affirmative Action goals and submit quarterly reporting.
  • Create position postings and analyze appropriate knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Manage reference checks for finalist candidates and consult with Hiring Managers.
  • Consult and advise employees on leave options and oversee transactional processing of leaves.
  • Determine employee eligibility for insurance benefits and retirement plans.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on organizational and job design concepts.
  • Partner with hiring managers to set salaries and provide information on merit increases.
  • Provide employee and labor relations counsel and expertise to ensure compliance with laws and policies.
  • Lead and implement HR initiatives that reflect and support MSUM's core values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in HR, Business Administration, or related field.
  • Three years of human resources experience processing payroll or HR transactions or administering employee benefits programs.
  • Strong customer service and human relations skills to interact with diverse individuals.
  • Demonstrated confidence and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent English speaking, writing, and reading skills.
  • Strong computer skills, especially with Microsoft 365, Zoom, and Adobe.
  • Intermediate MS Excel skills sufficient to clean data for reports.

Nice-to-haves

  • HR Certification (SHRM-CP or PHR).
  • Knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and university policies.
  • Strong customer service principles and adherence to MSUM core values.
  • Knowledge of affirmative action/equal opportunity policies.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with sensitivity.
