About the position

The Human Resources Specialist - Leaves and Benefits Coordinator at the City of Seattle is responsible for administering employee leaves, benefits, and worker's compensation programs within the Library. This role involves supporting the reporting of information from the HRIS, providing backup for ADA activities, and serving as a liaison with the Seattle Department of Human Resources. The position requires a detail-oriented and compassionate individual who can manage sensitive information and work collaboratively in a hybrid work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the administration of the Library's various leave provisions and policies.
  • Assist with employee ADA accommodations as needed.
  • Communicate changes in benefit plans, policies, and procedures to administration and staff.
  • Maintain current information on the Benefits and Health & Wellness pages on the Library's intranet.
  • Process employee requests for various types of leave and verify eligibility for compliance with laws and policies.
  • Maintain accurate records of leave balances, usage, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with employees, managers, and departments to manage leave status and timelines.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for benefit programs, ensuring timely enrollment and modifications.
  • Coordinate the annual open enrollment process and communicate deadlines to employees.
  • Provide guidance and support to employees regarding leave policies and benefits options.
  • Prepare regular reports on leave balances, trends, and utilization for HR leadership.
  • Collaborate with payroll to ensure accurate processing of leave-related pay.
  • Assist in the development and review of company leave policies to ensure compliance with laws.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, education, human resources, liberal arts, or social sciences preferred.
  • Three years of professional level work experience in human resources, focusing on benefits and leave administration functions.
  • Strong understanding of HR policies, benefits, and leave laws.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency with HRIS, payroll software, and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Workday from an HR perspective.
  • Experience in a public sector and unionized environment.
  • Experience with disability claims or workers' compensation processes.
