About the position

The Human Resources Specialist at South Bronx Job Corps plays a vital role in supporting the organization's mission to empower young people through education and career readiness. This position involves performing complex clerical tasks and human resources duties, including generalist responsibilities in the absence of the HR Manager. The specialist will contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for both students and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Enter employee information in the computerized human resources system, including personal data, compensation, benefits, training, attendance, and merits.
  • Review employment applications for accuracy and conduct interviews for non-exempt level applicants.
  • Prescreen applications for exempt candidates and conduct benefit and policy orientation with new hires.
  • Establish and maintain all employee personnel files and records, updating them to document personnel transactions.
  • Provide information to the Finance Department for payroll purposes and conduct reference checks as required.
  • Examine employee files to answer routine inquiries and provide information to authorized personnel.
  • Type job postings, letters, reports, memorandums, and performance appraisals, proofreading for errors.
  • Gather and compile data from personnel records to prepare required reports and maintain EEO/AAP logs.
  • Publish the center staff newsletter and assist in the development of the center Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in HR, ideally within a similar environment; benefits administration and compliance experience preferred
  • Familiarity with HR software (e.g., Paylocity, ADP)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and professionalism
  • Self-motivated, organized, and detail-oriented

Nice-to-haves

  • Previous HR and Payroll experience
  • Knowledge of basic EEO/AAP legislation
  • Basic interviewing skills
  • Sound business telephone techniques
  • Ability to use proper Business English and proofread documents accurately
