About the position

The Human Resources Specialist at Mayer Brown LLP plays a crucial role in supporting the HR functions for Business Services staff in the Chicago office. This position involves managing onboarding, offboarding, leave of absence processes, and diversity initiatives, ensuring a smooth integration of new hires and maintaining employee engagement and morale. The specialist collaborates with various departments to facilitate HR processes and supports the overall HR strategy of the firm.

Responsibilities

  • Provides day-to-day HR support for Business Services staff, ensuring successful implementation of staff development, morale, and engagement efforts.
  • Oversees and facilitates new hire orientation and onboarding processes, including communication with new hires and coordination with internal departments.
  • Administers new hire integration efforts by coordinating the 30- and 60-day feedback process.
  • Coordinates the departure process for Business Services staff, including conducting exit interviews and processing separation forms.
  • Administers all aspects of FMLA/medical leave processes and other leave programs, working closely with third-party administrators.
  • Collaborates with an outside vendor to ensure timely processing of unemployment claims.
  • Assists in the annual evaluation process and provides system assistance for feedback compilation.
  • Directs personnel to process PeopleSoft updates related to new hires and status changes, ensuring accurate payroll processing.
  • Coordinates employee events and retirement activities in collaboration with HR leadership.
  • Provides support for training sessions and office events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience directly related to the job functions.
  • 3+ years of progressive HR experience in a professional services environment, preferably in a law firm.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products and knowledge of software tools such as PeopleSoft.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment and support the firm's needs under pressure.
  • Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with onboarding platforms is a plus.
  • Prior experience in a legal or business services setting is preferred.
