About the position

The Human Resources Specialist at NC State University is a pivotal role within the College of Education, serving as the first point of contact for HR-related inquiries and needs. This position is responsible for the timely intake and triage of requests, ensuring that the college's HR functions are executed efficiently and effectively. The specialist will independently interpret policies and procedures to address immediate inquiries and contribute to strategic planning efforts. Utilizing a variety of technology systems, the HR Specialist will manage essential HR functions including job descriptions, recruitment and retention processes, employment authorizations, payroll specifications, and personnel record management. The role also involves handling separations, transfers, and retirements, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and policies. In addition to these core responsibilities, the HR Specialist will be expected to identify and resolve issues within HR program areas independently, serving as a backup to other HR specialists when necessary. The position requires a proactive and self-directed individual who can work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a collaborative and customer-focused work style. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to prioritize tasks and solve problems effectively. The HR Specialist will also engage in other duties and special projects as assigned, contributing to the overall mission of the College of Education to improve educational outcomes and advance the greater good.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first point of contact for HR-related inquiries and needs within the College of Education.
  • Independently interpret policies and procedures to respond to inquiries and assist in strategic planning.
  • Utilize technology systems to manage essential HR functions such as job descriptions, recruitment, and retention.
  • Handle employment authorizations, including I-9 documentation and Visas.
  • Manage payroll specifications and personnel record management.
  • Address separations, transfers, and retirements in compliance with regulations.
  • Identify and resolve issues within HR program areas independently.
  • Serve as a backup to other HR specialists as needed.
  • Engage in other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently interpret and apply regulations.
  • Intermediate to advanced level proficiency in Google Application Suite (Docs, Sheets, Drive, Team Drive).
  • Ability to effectively utilize Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Proactive and self-directed with the ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Collaborative and customer-focused work style with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong prioritization and problem-solving skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a human resources generalist capacity.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in business, human resources, or a related field.
  • Experience working in an academic, higher education environment, preferably within the UNC System.
  • Knowledge of HRIM systems, particularly PeopleSoft and PeopleAdmin.
