About the position

The Human Resources Specialist performs a variety of professional-level human resources duties that encompass recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, benefits administration, worker's and unemployment compensation, performance evaluations, training and development, employee recognition, and employee relations. This role is integral in providing support to the Human Resources team and ensuring that the HR functions are executed efficiently and effectively. The specialist is responsible for developing and coordinating the hiring process for part-time, seasonal, and high school interns, providing technical advice regarding interviewing and hiring, and assisting with the selection process for full-time employees as needed. In addition to recruitment, the Human Resources Specialist assists in the development, design, management, and implementation of the Columbus City School Intern Initiative Program. The role involves coordinating and attending job fairs and human resources-related associations to promote the organization and attract potential candidates. The specialist prepares various documents such as correspondence, job postings, and appointment announcements, utilizing tools like spreadsheets and the Microsoft Office Suite. They also assist with the online application and onboarding system (Neogov) and respond to employee inquiries regarding benefits, policies, and procedures. The specialist tracks human resources statistics, including FMLA usage and turnover rates, and creates reports to keep management informed. They process conditional offer letters, new hire paperwork, and salary change forms, while also assisting staff with employee relations issues and monitoring the internal culture of the organization. The role requires the specialist to be present in assigned parks to be available for employees, ensuring that they are informed throughout the interview and background check process. Furthermore, the specialist helps employees navigate the worker's compensation process and coordinates training for employees, including scheduling new employee orientations and maintaining personnel files. The Human Resources Specialist also participates in budget development and management, tracks expenses, and coordinates special personnel programs such as employee recognition initiatives. Acting in the absence of the Human Resources Manager, the specialist performs special projects and related duties as assigned, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the HR department.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and coordinates the part-time, seasonal, and high school intern hiring process with managers.
  • Provides technical advice regarding interviewing and hiring; conducts interviews and assists with the selection process.
  • Assists with the development, design, management, and implementation of the Columbus City School Intern Initiative Program.
  • Coordinates and attends job fairs and human resources-related associations.
  • Prepares correspondence, job postings, appointment announcements, and various documents utilizing spreadsheets, Microsoft Office Suite, and databases.
  • Assists with the online application and onboarding system (Neogov).
  • Answers employees' questions regarding benefits, FMLA, policies and procedures, and other human resources-related issues.
  • Tracks human resources statistics, such as FMLA usage, turnover, promotions, etc.
  • Creates FMLA reports and notifies employees and the payroll officer of usage.
  • Processes conditional offer letters, offer letters, new hire paperwork, salary change forms, etc.
  • Assists staff with employee relations issues and monitors the internal culture of the organization.
  • Keeps applicants informed during the interview and background check process.
  • Helps employees through the worker's compensation process, monitoring claims, and facilitating return to work accommodations.
  • Composes various types of correspondence, documents, and reports; prepares materials and informational packets for interviews, orientations, training, etc.
  • Participates in the development of the department budget; maintains budget and purchase log.
  • Coordinates training for employees and works with presenters on training opportunities.
  • Arranges, schedules, and conducts new employee orientations.
  • Assists with the maintenance of personnel files and related paperwork.
  • Coordinates special personnel programs such as all-employee meetings, volunteer and employee recognition programs, award programs, etc.
  • Acts in absence of the Human Resources Manager.
  • Performs special projects and related duties as required or assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Natural Resources Management, or other related field.
  • Some human resources experience, preferably in the public sector, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, interpersonal, and writing skills.
  • Ability to routinely exercise independent judgment and discretion.
  • Proficient with personal computers and various software including Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice-to-haves
