About the position

The Human Resources Specialist for the City of Norfolk, VA, plays a crucial role in supporting the HR Administration and Talent Acquisition operations. This position focuses on onboarding new employees and providing high-level customer service to both employees and applicants. The specialist will handle various administrative tasks, maintain personnel records, and assist in recruitment efforts, contributing to the overall mission of enhancing the city's workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Onboard new hires in collaboration with Talent Acquisition Analysts.
  • Assist with administrative aspects of recruitment processes.
  • Schedule and coordinate pre-employment background checks and drug screens.
  • Assist new hires with completing initial employment paperwork.
  • Enter new employee information into the HRIS system (PeopleSoft) accurately.
  • Create identification badges and process related requests.
  • Issue and maintain ID/building access cards.
  • Serve as a liaison between City departments and the Department of Information Technology regarding employee onboarding.
  • Finalize the roster for New Employee Orientation (NEO) in coordination with the Talent and Organizational Development team.
  • Respond to inquiries from employees and applicants regarding forms, recruitment, benefits, and policies.
  • Review, verify, and process new hire and payroll documents.
  • Ensure confidentiality and security of employee information and records.
  • Prepare administrative reports and reconcile errors as necessary.
  • Maintain HR files and correspondence in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience in Human Resources, preferably in Talent Acquisition and onboarding.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with PeopleSoft.
