About the position

The Human Rights and Civil Society Research Analyst II position involves supporting the Department of State's Office of International Religious Freedom by tracking global developments related to religious freedom. The role requires monitoring various information sources, conducting research, drafting documents, and providing analysis to assist State Department officers in their responses to religious freedom issues.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor abuses of religious freedom and positive developments related to the state of religious freedom.
  • Review information from media sources, NGOs, civil society, and classified reporting channels.
  • Travel periodically to assigned countries/regions for information gathering and monitoring.
  • Undertake research via open source and classified systems, preparing reports on foreign government officials' actions regarding religious freedom violations.
  • Compile comprehensive progress reports and summaries for the Report to Congress on International Religious Freedom.
  • Analyze religious freedom-related developments in assigned countries/regions.
  • Brief senior officials on the implications of developments in religious freedom.
  • Draft and edit written products related to human rights and religious freedom.
  • Respond to requests for information on religious freedom from various government agencies.
  • Help compile project results and develop strategic outreach plans.
  • Participate in training exercises and briefings to disseminate information about the office's mandate.

Requirements

  • Experience in policy research and analysis in international relations/affairs.
  • Knowledge of laws, rules, policies, and regulations regarding human rights and religious freedom.
  • Familiarity with various religious traditions and dynamics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Strong analysis and research skills to provide recommendations and technical advice.
  • Excellent organizational skills and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in standard software, including Microsoft Office Suite and database applications.
  • Knowledge of research and analytical methods to validate and interpret information.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple assignments with tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 10 or more years of experience or a Master's or other post-graduate degree preferred.
