About the position

The Human Rights and Civil Society Research Analyst II position at Cherokee Federal involves providing independent support to the Department of State's Office of International Religious Freedom. The role focuses on tracking global developments related to religious freedom, conducting research, and assisting State Department officers in responding to these developments. The analyst will monitor various information sources, draft documents, and engage with relevant stakeholders to inform policy decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor abuses of religious freedom and positive developments related to the state of religious freedom in assigned areas.
  • Review information from media sources, NGOs, and classified reporting channels.
  • Travel periodically to assigned countries for information gathering and monitoring.
  • Conduct research and prepare reports on actions of foreign officials regarding violations of religious freedom.
  • Compile progress reports and summaries for the Report to Congress on International Religious Freedom.
  • Prepare information for entry into relevant computer systems to inform policy determinations.
  • Analyze developments related to religious freedom and civil society in assigned regions.
  • Brief senior officials on implications of developments in religious freedom.
  • Draft and edit written products related to human rights and religious freedom.
  • Provide oral briefings for senior Department officials on relevant topics.
  • Respond to requests for information on religious freedom from various government agencies.
  • Help compile project results and develop strategic outreach plans.
  • Participate in training exercises and briefings to disseminate information about the office's work.

Requirements

  • Experience in policy research and analysis in international relations/affairs.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations regarding human rights and religious freedom.
  • Familiarity with various religious traditions and dynamics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Strong analysis and research skills to provide recommendations and technical advice.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new software.
  • Knowledge of research and analytical methods to validate and interpret information.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize multiple assignments with tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and sound judgment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to adjust plans and interactions as needed.
  • 10 or more years of experience or a Master's/post-graduate degree preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in human rights advocacy or policy analysis.
  • Familiarity with international relations and civil society monitoring.
