The HVAC/Energy Management Systems Technician I at Clemson University is responsible for performing a variety of HVAC tasks, including both corrective and preventative maintenance across all university buildings. This position operates primarily during the 3rd shift and requires adherence to all relevant safety regulations and building codes, including OSHA, DHEC, and EPA standards. The technician will be expected to carry out assigned duties in a timely and skillful manner, ensuring that all HVAC systems are functioning optimally. Communication and customer service are emphasized as top priorities, and the technician will also be responsible for training less-experienced workers in the HVAC field. The role may involve being subject to call back as needed and performing other duties as assigned. The technician will spend a significant portion of their time (65%) on essential HVAC maintenance tasks, which include the maintenance and repair of chilled water (C/W) and hot water (H/W) systems, air handling units (AHUs), fan coil units (FCUs), fire dampers, pumps, variable air volume (VAV) systems, direct expansion (DX) equipment, and exhaust systems. This includes performing scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance, changing filters, lubricating components, and troubleshooting various HVAC-related equipment. The technician will also be responsible for maintaining control systems, including both pneumatic and electronic systems, and will utilize various software and computer applications for control system management. In addition to HVAC maintenance, the technician will also be involved in the installation, upgrade, maintenance, and repair of heating water, chilled water, and steam systems, as well as various types of air handling and conditioning equipment. This includes working with hydronic pumps, heat exchangers, and associated piping. The technician will also maintain records for EPA refrigeration tracking and promote a safe workplace by adhering to safety practices and training other employees as needed.
