About the position

The position involves operating hand and power tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, inspecting, servicing, and repairing various heating and cooling systems including air conditioning units, heat pumps, and furnaces. The role requires monitoring inventory levels, ordering necessary parts and supplies, and ensuring adequate power supply for equipment operation. The technician will also be responsible for the installation of air conditioning units, performing preventive maintenance, and discussing malfunctions with department employees to identify necessary repairs. The job includes using various tools and equipment for repairs and maintenance, as well as ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Operates hand and power tools and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Inspects, services, and repairs air conditioning units, heat pumps, electric, oil and gas furnaces and heaters, and ventilating fans and electric motors under general supervision.
  • Monitors inventory levels and orders parts, supplies, equipment, and materials.
  • Inspects wiring, fuses, and circuit breakers to ensure adequate power for air conditioning units.
  • Installs air conditioning units according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Cleans, services, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on air conditioning units.
  • Discusses malfunctions and failures with department employees to identify problems and necessary repairs.
  • Examines malfunctioning units, dismantles parts, and repairs or replaces components.
  • Reassembles units after testing and makes adjustments for efficient operation.
  • Injects refrigerant into compressors to maintain prescribed operating pressure.
  • Verifies pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls for proper operation.
  • Operates and uses various testing and repair tools and equipment.
  • Installs, inspects, services, and repairs pumps, exhaust fans, compressors, air handlers, and duct work.
  • Cleans coils, replaces and tightens belts, and unstops drain pans.

Requirements

  • Certificate from a two-year vocational program in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
  • One year of experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems installation, maintenance, repair, or inspection.
  • Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA.
  • Must be certified as a Refrigerant Type III or Universal Technician by the ESCO Institute as required by EPA regulations.
  • Must differentiate various colors of color-coded wires.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
