About the position

The HVAC Operations & Maintenance Specialist at Johnson Controls is responsible for maintaining and servicing HVAC systems and other building systems at the University of Kansas. This role emphasizes hands-on technical experience and leadership, ensuring the efficient operation of various facilities including the Integrated Science Building and Central Utility Plant. The position requires a commitment to safety and the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Service, Repair, Maintain, Monitor and Adjust HVAC systems to keep within allowable parameters.
  • Perform a variety of service work, general maintenance and custodial activities including carpentry, painting, plumbing, and facility repairs.
  • Provide direction and training to less experienced O&M Specialists.
  • Plan, select, and lay out required materials for service, repair and preventive maintenance work.
  • Work from drawings, schematics, blueprints, job layouts or verbal instructions and operate a variety of tools and machines.
  • Requisition new supplies and equipment.
  • Perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation schedule to attend to emergency situations at the facility.
  • Comply with all company policies and procedures and adhere to company standards.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

  • Requires two year technical degree or two years' experience as an Operations & Maintenance Specialist II, or completion of an apprenticeship program.
  • Requires five or more years' experience in operations and maintenance.
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of various maintenance fundamentals sufficient to deal with service and repairs.
  • Must be physically able to perform basic maintenance tasks, including climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, and lifting heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work varying shifts, weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Required to use a variety of hand and power tools or man lift.
  • Basic Electrical system working knowledge.
  • May be required to possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be a team player committed to working in a quality environment.
  • Must be able to pass a thorough background check and subject interview.

Nice-to-haves

  • Universal EPA Refrigeration Certification.
  • Working knowledge of Metasys (BMS).
