About the position

Facilities Management at Arizona State University's Downtown Phoenix campus is seeking a skilled HVAC Refrigeration Technician. This role involves the installation, repair, overhaul, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration systems within complex research buildings. The technician will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving issues with refrigeration equipment and systems, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with established standards. The position requires the operation and monitoring of computer control systems, as well as the calibration and repair of building automation system sensing devices. The technician will maintain preventative maintenance records and communicate effectively to perform essential job functions. The work environment includes various types of spaces such as research laboratories, clean rooms, and administrative offices, and involves handling a wide range of HVAC and refrigeration equipment including chillers, cooling towers, and environmental growth chambers. The technician will work Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with the possibility of varying schedules based on assigned areas and coverage needs.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, install, repair, and overhaul refrigeration equipment and systems.
  • Operate and monitor computer control system equipment; detect source and nature of system problems.
  • Review, modify, and implement programming changes to building automation system to ensure efficient and effective system operations and conformance with standards and guidelines.
  • Calibrate, repair and replace building automation system sensing devices to specifications.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance records.
  • Read gauges and instruments and adjust mechanisms.
  • Operate refrigeration recovery equipment in compliance with EPA guidelines.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions of the job.

Requirements

  • Six years of progressively responsible HVAC or refrigeration experience; OR any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable skills, knowledge and abilities have been achieved.
  • Some positions may require chlorofluorocarbons certification upon employment.
  • Employee may be required to possess a valid US Driver's license of the appropriate class and required endorsements throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of HVAC or refrigeration tools, materials and test equipment.
  • Knowledge of repair, maintenance and installation techniques.
  • Experience in reading and understanding schematics.
  • Experience in analyzing HVAC or refrigeration malfunctions from performance and test equipment readings and determining appropriate repairs.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with DDC Metasys Control Systems and Phoenix Control Systems.
  • Familiarity with environmental growth chambers and ultra-low temperature freezers.
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions such as confined spaces and extreme temperatures.
