About the position

Great River Energy (GRE) is seeking a dedicated HVDC Technician/Electrician to join our team at the Coal Creek Converter Station in Underwood, North Dakota. This position is crucial for ensuring the operation, installation, testing, checkout, and maintenance of various equipment to achieve maximum reliability. The successful candidate will be responsible for adhering to GRE's safety rules, procedures, and guidelines while working collaboratively with crew members. The role requires effective communication with supervisors and forepersons regarding the overall conditions and status of work activities. The HVDC Technician/Electrician will perform maintenance on equipment including instrumentation, control systems, protections, monitoring, networking, thyristor valves, water treatment systems, heating and cooling systems, AC and DC power systems, fire protection, and security systems. Additionally, the technician will assist in the installation and testing of new equipment at the Coal Creek Converter Station, ensuring that all systems are operational and meet safety standards. The role also involves developing and updating maintenance procedures and maintaining accurate equipment records. This position offers a dynamic work environment with schedules that may include combinations of eight, ten, or twelve-hour shifts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical systems and a commitment to safety and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and/or assist in the maintenance of equipment at the Coal Creek Converter Station.
  • Install, test, and check out new equipment at the Coal Creek Converter Station.
  • Develop and update maintenance procedures and maintain equipment records.
  • Keep supervisors and forepersons informed of overall conditions and status of work activities.
  • Perform all other related duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • A two-year technical degree/diploma in electrical/computer/electronics related courses is required.
  • A minimum of three years of instrumentation or relaying related experience in the electric utility industry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of AC and DC circuits including Ohm's law.
  • Knowledge of power, current and voltage transformers.
  • Knowledge of high voltage electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of AC power measurement, familiarity with inductance, capacitance, and power factor.
  • Knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of data networks.
  • Knowledge of HVDC rectifier and inverter operation.
  • Knowledge of communication networks.
  • Skilled at effective communication, including good interpersonal skills as well as written and verbal communication.
  • Skill and ability to use personal computers and related software including test equipment software, asset management software, Windows-based programs, and email.
  • Skill and ability to maintain various types of mechanical equipment.
  • Skill and ability to read circuit diagrams, prints, and drawings.
  • Ability to distinguish colors on wires, control panels, and equipment.
  • Ability to learn to perform 'switching personnel' duties when required.
  • Ability to coordinate work or tasks and delegate if needed to appropriate personnel.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work alone without direct supervision.
  • Ability to ensure security procedures are followed, including immediate notification of potential incidents.
  • Ability to work safely alone and with others while following GRE safety rules, certifications, and procedures.
  • Ability to maintain a valid driver's license and perform the essential functions of the job.
