About the position

The Highway Maintenance Crew Chief is responsible for leading a crew in maintaining and preserving highways, shoulders, roadside areas, and related structures. This role involves assigning and monitoring work activities, performing skilled maintenance duties, and ensuring safety standards are met. The position requires outdoor work in various weather conditions and includes training and guiding crew members while assisting supervisors in managing personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules, distributes, and guides work assignments of maintenance workers according to established workflow and safety requirements.
  • Reviews and reports on crew members' work performance to ensure conformity to rules, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Trains maintenance co-workers in specific tasks and job practices to improve performance levels.
  • Directs maintenance operations such as armor coating, crack sealing, and shoulder repair to maintain highways and roadsides.
  • Operates maintenance equipment including trucks, rollers, and snowplows to repair and maintain surfaces.
  • Safely moves and handles various equipment and materials, including hazardous materials, from the roadway.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
  • Experience in highway maintenance and operation of general and specialized maintenance equipment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to be on-call and respond during non-scheduled hours including holidays and weekends for emergencies.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions and during traffic management activities.
  • Some positions may require specific certifications such as flagging certification or pesticide applicator licenses.
