About the position

As an Hy-Chi Department Cook at Hy-Vee, you will play a crucial role in preparing a variety of foods for the Hy-Chi department, ensuring that both hot and cold food cases are well-stocked and appealing to customers. You will be expected to greet customers warmly, assist them in locating products, and handle their requests with care and attention. In addition to customer service, you will be responsible for the preparation of food items, which includes cleaning and heating woks, cooking soups and meats, and preparing vegetables and sauces with the appropriate spices. You will monitor food levels in hot cases, ensuring they are replenished as necessary, and will also be tasked with ordering supplies when needed. Maintaining cleanliness in your work area and adhering to hygiene standards is essential, as is preparing items for the next day’s service. This role requires a proactive approach to teamwork, as you will collaborate with co-workers to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment. The Hy-Chi Department Cook position is fast-paced and requires the ability to work under pressure while meeting deadlines. You will be expected to follow all company policies and guidelines, report to work on time, and assist in other areas of the store as needed. Responsibilities

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions.
  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assists customers by escorting them to the products for which they're looking, securing products that are out of reach, and loading or unloading heavy items.
  • Answers the telephone promptly when called upon, and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call.
  • Works with co-workers as a team to ensure customer satisfaction and a pleasant work environment.
  • Prepares the woks by cleaning with water, heating to an appropriate temperature, and adding oil for cooking.
  • Cooks soups first and then meats, prepares vegetables and ready sauces, adding spices as needed.
  • Combines all ingredients with the meat and places food in hot cases, monitoring amounts and refilling as necessary.
  • Orders product and supplies when necessary or notifies department head of needs.
  • Cleans work area at the end of the shift and fills the cold case with fresh-made food.
  • Prepares items for the next day after everything else is done, including storing meats in the freezer.
  • Maintains strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.

Requirements

  • Must have the ability to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.
  • Must have the ability to understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions, write identifying information, and request supplies orally or in writing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; training provided.
