About the position

The Hybrid/HV Powertrain Engineer II at Honda Racing Corporation USA is responsible for providing engineering support during race and test events, focusing on the operation and optimization of electric hybrid powertrains. This role involves making critical decisions regarding powertrain performance, implementing strategies for data analysis, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. The engineer will work closely with customer and partner teams to meet performance goals and enhance vehicle reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to race and test events to provide trackside engineering support.
  • Oversee the engineering and operation of the electric hybrid powertrain/ERS.
  • Make key decisions regarding powertrain and hybrid system operation and optimization.
  • Implement strategies and software updates for performance enhancement.
  • Develop data analysis and performance differentiators for the car.
  • Follow energy management processes from simulation to testing and driver feedback.
  • Ensure HV and electrical safety is maintained at all times.

Requirements

  • BS Degree in Engineering with emphasis in electrification or hybrid vehicle performance, or equivalent work experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in a professional racing environment, preferably in a track support role.
  • Experience with racing powertrains and related mechanical and electronic systems, with a preference for electrical/hybrid powertrain experience.
  • Previous report writing and database experience.
  • Understanding of high-performance engines/vehicles, both theoretical and practical.
  • Knowledge of energy management, deployment, regeneration, and optimization.
  • Familiarity with traction and vehicle stability controls.
  • Understanding of racing vehicle controls and data acquisition/telemetry systems, including CAN bus expertise.
  • Experience in control engineering within a motorsport environment.
  • Knowledge of software lifecycles, development environments, and collaboration tools.
  • Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Competent hands-on skills with a variety of hand tools.
  • Excellent computing skills, including proficiency in Microsoft products, McLaren System Monitor, and ATLAS, Pi Research analysis software.
  • Programming skills in Python, Matlab, and C# preferred.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hybrid Hypercar, IMSA/WEC, Formula E, or Formula 1 hybrid era experience.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, time-critical environment.
