About the position

FPM is a full-service environmental and engineering consulting firm established on Long Island and is presently seeking a full-time Entry Level (0 to 2 yrs. experience) Hydrogeologist/Geologist at its headquarters in Bohemia, NY. The selected candidate, under the supervision of senior project staff, will be responsible for completing field and office tasks including, but not limited to, contractor oversight, community air monitoring, sampling of soil, groundwater, sediment and soil vapor, reviewing and interpreting analytical data, and assisting with the preparation of technical reports. The candidate should be eager to learn existing and new regulatory programs, take on new tasks, and be open to learning new skills and working closely with others.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of Phase I Environmental Site Assessments.
  • Conduct groundwater, soil, and sediment sampling.
  • Conduct indoor air and soil vapor sampling for soil vapor intrusion investigations.
  • Conduct operation and maintenance of remedial and sub-slab depressurization systems.
  • Oversee and direct drilling/direct-push contractors for soil borings, monitoring wells, temporary wells, soil vapor points, and sub-slab vapor points.
  • Oversight of remedial projects, including underground storage tank removals, remedial system installations, and soil/sediment excavation.
  • Prepare status reports for ongoing projects for senior staff.
  • Learn to operate and maintain field meters and equipment, including oil/water interface probes, PID, LEL, dust meters, multi-parameter water quality meters, submersible sampling pumps, low flow sampling pumps, and hand augers.
  • Maintain detailed field notes and logs.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Manage multiple assigned tasks concurrently.
  • Assist senior staff with preparation of technical reports, including the preparation of analytical data tables and graphs and report figures.
  • Work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Work safely and in accordance with established health and safety protocols.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Hydrogeology/Geology or related environmental field.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and field sampling skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Motivated to learn new sampling methods, use new equipment, and become proficient with computer software programs.
  • Good working knowledge with MS Office (primarily Excel and Word), Adobe and database software programs.
  • Knowledge of GIS and AutoCAD a plus.

Nice-to-haves

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification a plus.
