About the position

The Public Waters Inventory Update Hydrologist position at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is responsible for managing and executing the Public Waters Inventory (PWI) update as mandated by the 2024 Minnesota Legislature. This role involves overseeing a team of hydrologists, conducting technical assessments, facilitating public participation, and ensuring timely updates to the PWI, which identifies public waters in Minnesota. The position offers a flexible work arrangement with potential telework options.

Responsibilities

  • Support and direct the work of four new hydrologists responsible for completing the PWI Update.
  • Oversee and conduct technical aspects of identifying needed updates and corrections to Minnesota's PWI.
  • Conduct public participation aspects of the PWI Update process.
  • Finalize updates to the PWI within the legislated timeframe.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, agricultural engineering, environmental engineering, geological engineering, hydrology, or related field.
  • Four years of professional experience in surface water regulatory or management programs.
  • Knowledge of Minnesota's public waters statutes and rules, including buffer law.
  • Experience using GIS software and analysis.
  • Excellent writing skills for procedural documents and reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • An advanced degree (Master's or Ph.D.) in a relevant field.
  • Experience administering Minnesota's public water work permit program.
  • Project management experience with planning and procedural compliance.
  • Lead work experience to direct and train staff.
  • Skills in meeting facilitation and conflict resolution.
