About the position

The Hydrology Members will assist the National Park Service (NPS) staff with backcountry hydrology fieldwork projects, data collection, and data management at Grand Canyon National Park. This internship offers hands-on experience in hydrology and aquifer studies, contributing to significant park infrastructure projects. Members will engage in planning and executing multi-day backcountry trips, performing hydrology data collection, and managing field samples, while also gaining exposure to various conservation fields and networking opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning and preparation of multi-day backcountry trips into the canyon.
  • Create field itineraries and complete necessary forms & permits for backcountry work.
  • Review and follow Standard Operating Procedures for hydrologic data collection and maintenance of monitoring equipment.
  • Assist with instrumentation and maintenance of backcountry cave, spring, and stream gage sites.
  • Perform hydrology data collection of water samples, discharge, water quality measurements, and downloads of logger data.
  • Conduct research of previous trip reports and existing gauge setups.
  • Manage data from field samples, including data mining, compilation, organization, and archiving into Park database systems.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Ability to represent ACE and the partner organization professionally.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Pass a two-part criminal history check.
  • Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to carry 30-50lb packs on multi-day, overnight backcountry trips.
  • Ability to hike in steep and rugged terrain during extreme weather conditions.
  • Comfortable caving and working in dark, narrow passages.

Nice-to-haves

  • Pursuing or holding an undergraduate degree in geosciences or a related field with coursework in hydrology, geomorphology, and geologic field methods.
  • Experience measuring water quality and flow and collecting water samples in the field.
  • Knowledge of hydrology data loggers, installation, and data transfer.
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS and statistical programs (e.g., 'R', Python) for data management, mapping, and analysis.
  • Experience with climbing, ascending, or rappelling using ropes.
