About the position

The Hyperbaric Clinical Specialist is responsible for coordinating the safe and effective operations of hyperbaric chambers and related support systems, ensuring that patients receive appropriate and safe therapy. This role involves performing patient care and overseeing the day-to-day maintenance of hyperbaric equipment. The specialist serves as the primary point of contact for patients and their families, providing education on the appropriateness of hyperbaric therapy, care plans, and safety protocols. In addition to patient care, the specialist is tasked with organizing and implementing the hyperbaric safety program, which includes reviewing incidents, collecting information, and providing safety-related training. The role requires maintaining compliance with various regulatory standards, such as NFPA 99, and supporting clinical hyperbaric facility accreditations. The specialist also monitors and documents patient responses to therapies, actively markets the Hyperbaric Unit, and ensures that all protocols and care plans are adhered to. The position requires collaboration with facility management and departmental staff to provide hyperbaric-related education and to ensure that equipment meets safety standards. The specialist conducts quarterly fire safety drills and meets monthly with the Medical Director to ensure compliance with safety standards and reimbursement requirements. This role is critical in fostering positive relationships with external entities and ensuring that all maintenance activities are conducted in accordance with safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate safe and effective operations for hyperbaric chambers and related support systems.
  • Perform patient care and ensure patients receive appropriate, safe therapy.
  • Instruct patients and families on hyperbaric therapy, care plans, and safety protocols.
  • Perform hyperbaric treatments, including wound care, and incorporate Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) measures.
  • Organize and provide hyperbaric-related education to staff.
  • Implement and manage the hyperbaric safety program, including incident reviews and safety training.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory standards such as NFPA 99 and support facility accreditations.
  • Monitor and document patient responses to therapies performed by the Hyperbaric Unit.
  • Market and publicize the Hyperbaric Unit.
  • Ensure adherence to protocols and care plans, making recommendations to management as needed.
  • Conduct quality control and instrument check procedures, maintaining related records.
  • Evaluate equipment and supplies for safety compliance, restricting hazardous items as necessary.
  • Conduct quarterly fire safety drills to improve staff response to emergencies.
  • Meet monthly with the Medical Director to ensure compliance with safety standards and reimbursement requirements.
  • Coordinate with the Program Director and DCS Regional Director of Safety for hyperbaric chamber upgrades and repairs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Four (4) years of related experience, preferably in an acute care setting.
  • Current Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT) certification required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Attendance or verification of attendance to an Introductory Hyperbaric Training Course approved by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT).
  • Knowledge of hyperbaric clinical processes, procedures, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and hospital regulations.
  • Skill in code response and resuscitation, assisting with ventilation and advanced life support monitoring for patients.
  • Skill in administering care and monitoring patients as prescribed by a Physician, in compliance with respiratory care procedures and policies.
  • Skill in using computer applications, including Microsoft Office Products.
  • Ability to train others in proper patient care and bariatric procedures.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to prepare and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to develop and present information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from employees, patients, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.

Nice-to-haves

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
