About the position
The Hypobaric Technician supports the FAA's Civil Aerospace Medical Institute by observing research subjects in a hypobaric chamber, ensuring their safety, and providing situational knowledge during altitude research experiments. This part-time, on-call position involves monitoring subjects who simulate airplane passengers at pressure altitudes and requires a strong understanding of pressure-breathing systems and decompression science.
Responsibilities
- Attend hypobaric research events from start to finish.
- Take anthropomorphic measurements prior to each event and ensure a BMI < 40.
- Complete a pre-flight, pure oxygen breathing protocol with vigorous exercise to minimize the risk of altitude decompression sickness.
- Observe research subjects for approximately 6 hours inside the hypobaric chamber, watching for signs of decompression sickness and assisting with oxygen masks and equipment adjustments.
Requirements
- Must have a valid State/Federal ID with picture.
- Familiarity with pressure-breathing masks, regulators, and apparatus.
- Understanding of decompression science and ability to recognize symptoms of decompression sickness.
- Basic understanding of aerospace, space, or SCUBA/Deep Sea diving or closely related subjects.
- Must be between 17 and 50 years of age.
- Ability to speak English fluently.
- Energetic and possess stamina to wear oxygen masks for extended periods.
- Physically able to participate in simulated altitude decompression events.
Nice-to-haves
- Associate's degree in Anatomy, Physiology, Biology, or Life Sciences.
- Experience as a Hypobaric Chamber Technician or Aerospace Physiologist Technician.
- Specialized experience in oxygen mask and oxygen system maintenance.
- Experience using physiologic sensor technologies.
