About the position

The iPad hardware team in Austin, TX is seeking a motivated Hardware System Design Engineer to tackle significant challenges in the design and development of iPad products. This unique position encompasses the entire product lifecycle, starting from the initial concept and extending through to mass production. As a key member of the team, you will engage in electrical design, simulation, bring-up, debugging, and validation processes for iPads. Your role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, software, silicon engineering, and various module teams such as wireless, battery, camera, sensing, display, and factory test. This collaborative environment is fast-paced and dynamic, providing opportunities for you to make impactful design decisions that will benefit millions of iPad users worldwide. In your day-to-day activities, you will be responsible for supporting factory builds and working closely with multi-functional technology teams. Your contributions will be critical to the overall design and functionality of the iPad, ensuring that the product meets high standards of quality and performance. Additionally, there may be opportunities for international travel as part of your role, allowing you to engage with teams and processes globally. Responsibilities

  • Engage in electrical design, simulation, bring-up, debug, and validation for iPads.
  • Support factory builds and collaborate with multi-functional technology teams.
  • Make design decisions that impact the overall product development process.
  • Work closely with mechanical engineering, software, silicon engineering, and module teams.
  • Analyze solutions and make system design trade-offs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical/Computer Engineering or equivalent.
  • 3+ years of relevant industry experience designing consumer electronics and/or embedded systems.
  • Strong fundamentals in electrical engineering, including analog and digital design, signal/power integrity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Comfortable in a lab environment using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.

Nice-to-haves

  • Hands-on experience in prototyping, bring-up, debug, and validation.
  • Experience with schematic capture and rigid/flexible PCB layout.
  • Solid understanding of design and validation requirements for common interfaces (e.g., I2C, SPI, JTAG, I2S) and high-speed interfaces (e.g., USB, MIPI, PCIe, HDMI, DP, Thunderbolt, DDR Memory, Ethernet).
  • Exposure to numerical modeling, simulation, and analysis tools such as Spice, 2D/3D field solvers, power & signal integrity.
  • Use of scripting languages to assist with hardware development and data analysis.
