About the position

The I.S./Telecom Operator at St. Tammany Health System is responsible for operating the telephone switchboard, managing incoming calls, and providing essential communication services within the hospital. This role includes performing overhead pages, monitoring security and maintenance alarms, and serving as an information desk for patients and employees. The operator also supports the Information Systems helpdesk for after-hours troubleshooting and coordinates communications for Home Health and Hospice departments. The position requires flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, to ensure continuous support for the health system's operations.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the telephone switchboard and route calls appropriately.
  • Perform overhead pages and announce codes for hospital notifications.
  • Monitor hospital security, fire, and maintenance systems' alarms.
  • Serve as an information desk for patients and employees.
  • Dispatch hospital staff via VHF/UHF radio communications.
  • Notify emergency services and assist with routing first responders.
  • Provide after-hours helpdesk support for troubleshooting and computer network issues.
  • Create and distribute hospital rosters and perform clerical duties.
  • Coordinate communications between patients, families, and medical staff for Home Health and Hospice departments.
  • Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by supervisors.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Associate degree in Communications, Information Technology, Telecommunications, or a Health-related field is preferred.
  • Experience in professional verbal and written communications with proper spelling and grammar is required.
  • Computer typing skills and knowledge of computer concepts and logic are necessary.
  • Excellent customer service skills and problem-solving abilities are required.
  • Previous switchboard experience is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively during emergency situations is essential.
  • Understanding of medical terminology and previous customer service experience in healthcare is preferred.
  • Experience with public broadcast systems and overhead paging is preferred.
  • Experience in telecommunications, emergency management, or '911' dispatch is preferred.

  • Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Confidence with public broadcast systems is preferred.
