The Surgical Technologist Apprentice participates in a 2 year apprenticeship program. Selected participants, while enrolled in the Illinois Central College Surgical Technologist Program, will receive fully funded tuition for the program and work as a Surgical Technologist Apprentice at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center for a minimum of 8 hours per pay period. The Surgical Technologist Apprentice will also receive an Apprentice Stipend to assist with the cost-of-living expenses while enrolled full-time in the Surgical Technologist program at ICC. While in the accredited Surgical Technologist program, as well as the Surgical Technologist Apprenticeship, participants will spend 8 hours per pay period cleaning the operating room and assisting with storage of equipment and supplies. Upon completion of the sterile technique and scrubbing didactic, the Surgical Technologist Apprentice, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Surgical Technologist, will assist the surgeon during the operative procedure by maintaining inventory, passing instruments and supplies, and holding retractors. The apprentice will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served (newborn through geriatric). The goal of this program is to transition into a Surgical Technologist role after the apprenticeship, graduation and completion of the accredited Surgical Technologist program.
