About the position

The ICU Education Specialist RN at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center is responsible for developing and implementing educational programs for nursing staff, focusing on enhancing clinical, management, and research skills. This role involves assessing learning needs, facilitating staff development, and promoting career advancement through mentorship and effective educational strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates expertise in the teaching/learning process and assists management and clinical staff to develop and provide educational programs.
  • Utilizes Prophecy Assessments to identify learning needs and assists nurse managers, clinical nurse specialists, clinical educators, quality coordinators, and preceptors in planning learning activities.
  • Develops and performs needs assessments in collaboration with management, clinical nurse specialists, and nursing staff to determine developmental and educational needs.
  • Assesses critical thinking, interpersonal relations, and technical skills of staff to assist in categorization of orientation and staff development.
  • Communicates with staff to facilitate development of their clinical, management, and/or research skills.
  • Promotes career advancement including clinical ladder and differentiated practice through mentorship.
  • Consults with management and clinical staff to coordinate an effective preceptor and mentor program.
  • Consults with management to develop, revise, and implement cost-effective patient outcomes driven educational programs, tools, and materials for all nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with management to plan and direct new employee orientation.
  • Leads and participates in the Performance Enhancement program and other quality enhancement activities through monitoring and evaluating the outcomes of educational offerings.
  • Integrates research findings into clinical practice, educational programs, and policy updates.
  • Supports and participates in unit-based research projects to promote a knowledge base for the nursing profession.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Registered Nurse License
  • BLS Certification
  • Three (3) years of clinical education experience
  • ACLS Certification within 6 months of hire

  • Experience in cardiothoracic/vascular surgery
  • Experience in organ transplantation
  • Experience in peripheral revascularization
  • Experience with cardiac assist devices
  • Experience with temporary/permanent implantation
  • Experience with ECMO and vascular access surgery
